GIS TECHNICIAN

Supported the Asset Management Division in maintaining and enhancing GIS capabilities by acquiring, managing, and updating data sets, and fostering collaborative data-sharing initiatives. Utilized various GIS tools to ensure accurate and current spatial data is available for campus operations, maintenance, and project support.

USED: ArcGIS Pro, AGOL, Arcade, FieldMaps, AutoCAD Map 3D, Python, Trimble Connect, TerraFlex ; Photoshop, Illustrator, and Adobe Acrobat

Developed GIS Resources: Designed standardized GIS mapping templates, publications, and reference materials, enhancing support for the Utilities Division and other staff.
Ensured Data Accuracy: Implemented proactive updates to GIS layers for an online utility database, ensuring real-time accuracy and improving data accessibility.
Streamlined Data Collection: Spearheaded various FieldMap projects, optimizing data collection processes and significantly increasing operational efficiency.

FACILITIES MAP

During my time at Facilities Management, I assisted the GIS unit in mapping utilities across the UC Davis campus. This role involved collaborating with multiple divisions and serving as the primary test user for FieldMaps, an ESRI-affiliated field collection app, to collect new and missing data.

Through my projects, I developed standardized GIS mapping templates, publications, and reference materials to support users of FacilitiesMap. My work ensured that the utilities data remained current and accessible, significantly contributing to the efficiency of utility management and data collection efforts across the campus.

2024 gis mapbooks

As part of my internship, I was tasked with developing the 2024 UC Davis GIS Map Book. This project ensured accurate navigation across the main campus, Cuarto housing, Research Park, Russell Ranch, and city facilities in Davis. Users can efficiently locate destinations using the Key Map at the front or the indices at the back, organized by Facilities Database Index Name, CAAN, or Zone number. The map book also incorporates all modifications to buildings, roads, and other features made over the past year.

My work on this map book contributed to its accuracy and usability for all users.

FIRE GRID & HYDRANT MAP

Following the completion of the 2024 UC Davis GIS Map Book, I contributed to the UC Davis Fire Grid & Hydrant Map for the fire department. This map delineates various types of fire hydrants and connections, enhancing readability. An index at the back facilitates locating the nearest connection to hydrants. Adjustments were made to hydrants, domestic water, building outlines, and roads to ensure accuracy. The iterative process, guided by the specific needs of the fire department and stringent quality control measures, refined the map. Addressing concerns such as text readability and layer interactions on CAD significantly improved the final output’s clarity and usability. Incorporating new elements, like IDs, further enhanced the map’s functionality. The culmination of these efforts has resulted in a product we are proud of.

FINAL contribution

As I wrapped up my tenure, I aimed to leave a lasting contribution by developing specialized tools to enhance data management and accuracy within our Utility Division. Recognizing the challenges in comparing and maintaining consistency across various datasets—Excel files, Shapefiles, and ID systems—I created Python scripts tailored for these tasks.

These scripts automate the comparison of Excel and Shapefile data, allowing users to easily filter and identify discrepancies between master records and field data. They generate clear, actionable reports that highlight missing or inconsistent information, crucial for maintaining data integrity.

In addition to data comparison tools, I introduced a spatial comparator for verifying Shapefile accuracy post-field data collection and a duplicate finder to ensure uniqueness within our ID system. These tools not only streamlined our workflows but also improved the reliability of our deliverables, including the Hydrant and GIS maps.

By empowering my colleagues with these tools, I aimed to ensure continuity in maintaining high standards of data quality and operational efficiency. I am confident that these contributions will have a positive and lasting impact on the division's ability to deliver accurate and reliable information.

In the near future, I'd like to make a graphical user interface (GUI) to make it easier on the eye.
